Jesus detangles

When my girls were little there was a part of the bedtime routine that I would dread - combing out their hair after their bath or shower. They both had thick wavy hair.   They loved to run and play all day, and the result was a tangled mess! Even after shampooing, the tangles and knots were awful. The combing out process was tough, painful and many times ended with tears and frustration. Finally, a friend recommended a conditioner with a great detangler. Although I was skeptical, I tried it and was pleasantly surprised that it did actually improve the combing out process. Oh, we still had to work through that tangled mess with a few tugs and pulls but it was easier, on them and on me! Recently, I read the following passage in The Message about Jesus and his teachings: “With many stories like these, he presented his message to them, fitting the stories to their experiences and maturity. He was never without a story when he spoke. When he was alone with his disciples, he went over everything, sorting out the tangles, untying the knots.”  Mark 4:33-34

Did you catch that last line “…when he was alone with his disciples, he went over everything, sorting out the tangles, untying the knots.”

Are you struggling with some kind of tangled mess in your life? Is there something that has you tied up in knots? Or maybe you have been studying scripture and you’re stuck on something and can’t quite grasp the truth of a certain passage?

In any case, God’s Word is clear.  “When he was alone with his disciples, he went over everything.” The first step to clarity and understanding, to untying our knots and sorting out any mess, is to be alone with God. Have you spent time alone with God? Have you looked to God’s truth to help you “sort out the tangles and untie the knots?” It may seem strange to compare Jesus to a detangling conditioner, but that is exactly who He is and what He does! Only Jesus can take the messes in our lives and sort them out. Only Jesus can untie those knots that bind us. Only Jesus can straighten out our thinking, revealing His truth, giving us clarity and understanding. Only Jesus.

Don’t try to untangle the mess alone.  Don’t try to untie those knots by yourself. Don’t get frustrated because you can’t grasp a truth in God’s word. Just like with the hair conditioner, we still have our part to do, but “applying” Jesus and his truth is the key.  Have you met with Jesus today?
