It’s actually pretty rare that I am totally wordless. But this is one of those days. The only word that keeps rolling around on my tongue is celebrate. Why? Because I have a lot to celebrate! But that word, celebrate, just does not feel good enough, big enough, right enough. There must be a better word, I thought. So I looked it up. Some synonyms for celebrate are jubilate, rejoice, revel, proclaim. Make merry, let loose, kick up one’s heels, mark with a red letter! Wow! I’m not sure which one to choose. Still, none of them seem quite right.
You’re wondering what it is I’m celebrating, aren’t you? “Maybe she won the lottery,” you might be thinking. Or found the bargain of the century. Or discovered the best-ever recipe for flourless chocolate cake (that’s also fat free!).
But, no…even better than all of that – I’m celebrating God!
There might be better words I could use: Glorify, praise, extol…hail, acclaim, magnify.
But in the end, there simply are no words right enough.
So, with the posture of my heart and the totality of my being I will acknowledge our all-sufficient, all-knowing, all-powerful, loving and merciful God.
He has been mighty in our midst.
God who created the universe and keeps it spinning, who hung each star in the sky and keeps them shining, who gave me my first breath and keeps me breathing – this very same God has been mighty in our midst!
God who connects hearts and hands, weaving souls together into the beautiful body of Christ – this very same God has been mighty in our midst!
God who heals the broken hearted, puts the lonely in families, and welcomes the lost with open arms – this very same God has been mighty in our midst!
God, our Abba Father, who scans the horizon longing for each one of his precious daughters to make their way home, and flings wide the gate of grace as he sees each beloved face approach – this very same God has been mighty in our midst!
And amazingly, as I, in my weak but blessed humanity struggle to find the right words, this very same God, celebrates! He celebrates as you and I walk through that gate of grace and fall into his eager arms.
Maybe celebrateis just right after all.
The Lord your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings because of you, and he will refresh your life with his love. Zephaniah 3:17 CEV
